How the lessons work
- Place your fingers on the home row: A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right. Feel the small bumps on F and J.
- Start typing. The next key is highlighted on the keyboard and its color shows which finger to use.
- A wrong key does not move you forward. Press the right one to continue.
- Finish with at least 90% accuracy to pass. 95% earns two stars, 98% earns three.
Lessons are available for five keyboards: English (QWERTY), Arabic, French (AZERTY), Spanish and German (QWERTZ). Pick yours from the Keyboard menu. Your progress is saved in this browser for each keyboard, so you can stop and continue later. The lessons follow the physical keys, so they work even if your computer is set to another keyboard language.
The 11 lessons
- 1 to 3: the home row, the base for everything else.
- 4 to 8: the top row, two keys at a time.
- 9 to 11: the bottom row, comma, period and slash.
Tips
- Keep your eyes on the screen, not on your hands. The on-screen keyboard is there so you never need to look down.
- Go slowly. Accuracy first; speed comes on its own.
- Ten minutes a day works better than one long session a week.
- After each key, bring the finger back to its home key.
When you have finished the lessons, measure your speed with the typing test, and read Home Row Keys: Finger Chart and Practice Words and How to Improve Typing Accuracy.
